I dunno i dont consider brand new out of the box "active players." I mean they could very easily play for 3 months and never touch it again. I look at the longtime players. I see and feel very little encouragement to keep the longtime player in this game and so if you judge a game by longtime seasoned players this game doesnt have much of it... more should have stayed yet too many things have happened... heck Ive even seen the people who are in charge of "public relations" pretty much ignore a part of the playerbase for the almost a year now... Yeah all you strictly PvE'ers will hate me but theres some serious issues with PvP. No word from ANET or the PR though.

As a PvEer I still see the issues with the PvP as many do, you are not alone

But, this isn't the thread for that discussion.

People quit because despite all GW good points it still lacks what the P2P games offer, which is choices, originality and even elite stuff. People like to feel special, GW really doesn't cater for that type of player. Yes, there is 'rare' drops but even those have numerous these days.

A lot of my PvE friends moved on to WoW. While this forum and GW players in general love to bash the game, for PvE content it is far superior (if you can stand the grind, I couldn't)Some moved onto EVE, which offers great PvP and a decent community as well (far friendlier and mature then GW community) but that game requires a great deal of time (again why I moved back to GW)

One thing I always notice is a misunderstanding on how many people play the game. When Anet says "Over 3 million copies sold!" I've read people mistake that to mean over 3 million accounts and even up to over 3 million active players. So when they say over 3 million they mean combined purchases of the chapters. Think of how many people have one account but more then one chapter. Then think of all the people who aren't active. Hell, let's throw some botter's in there as well. Now I know most botter's don't use full versions but i'm willing to bet quite a few do.

I'd like to see some more specific figures. Like X amount of chapter Y were sold. Also I'd like to see their definition of active players and how many of those there are. Oh and let's not forget how many players are in what territory. While I'm dreaming here I'd also like to see X amount of people playing Y chapter at Z time.

Obviously Anet nor NCsoft are going to release such figures to the public because the numbers are going to be much lower then peoples expectations and probably crush morale in the community. If anyone has some of these specific numbers don't be bashful to send me a PM :P

To Keep on topic I went back to one of the closest press releases I could find that might give the closest insight on how many active players there are. According to This press release from 10/5/6 they had a little less then half a million players for the weekend event. If I remember correctly weren't they letting players who didn't own GW access keys for this event? That might affect those numbers slightly. I know that release is nearly a year dated but that's the best I could find.

While this information is too general for my taste I thought I'd include it here:
*One Million Copies 9/22/5
*Two Million Copies 6/19/6
*Three Million Copies 12/13/6
*3.5 Million Copies 7/2/7
I guess we will see after GWEN if these numbers just reflect no new content or a lack of interest.
